Why Ash Must Back King Kev; Beresford: There Is No Need for Fans to Panic

NEWCASTLE United favourite John Beresford doesn't believe Magpies fans should get too anxious when it comes to Toon tycoon Mike Ashley splashing the cash this summer.

Bez was one of Kevin Keegan's most successful signings during his first era in charge after the Toon boss nabbed him from Portsmouth for just pounds 650,000.

And players of the calibre of Andy Cole, Scott Sellars, David Ginola, Les Ferdinand and Tino Asprilla - not to mention the pounds 15m man Alan Shearer - followed Bez to St James's.

A new era, though, has already dawned on United, and while a change of ownership during the summer may have hindered many clubs, Newcastle, under the guidance of Ashley and chairman Chris Mort, snapped up NINE new faces.

Now United fans know new blood is needed once more with Peter Ramage and Stephen Carr already with one foot through the exit door at St James's Park.

And after KK insisted that the best United can hope for next season is fifth position, clearly quality and not quantity will take Newcastle back to the promised land. …
