JOEY BARTON will be left kicking his heels when Newcastle United go to his native Merseyside for Sunday's finale with Everton at Goodison Park.

A difficult first season at St James's Park is now over for the pounds 5.8m signing from Manchester City, and in the close season he has two appearances in court.

The conditions of Barton's bail stop him from travelling to Liverpool on Sunday, and the midfielder is quite naturally down in the dumps.

But Barton has been given a boost from Kevin Keegan, with the United manager hinting that the controversial once-capped England international will be very much part of his plans next season.

Keegan accepts that Barton's off-the-field problems are of his "own making" but the United manager is happy with his efforts on the field during the recent revival, which ended against Chelsea at St James's on Monday.

Keegan, who had Barton as a player at Manchester City, said: "I think Joey can be really pleased with his performances and the way he has handled a tough situation. …
