'Miserable' Roy Looks for Quality

FOR the second season running, Roy Keane is adamant Sunderland have nothing to celebrate but he is refusing to say what will constitute a successful 2008-09 until he knows how many of his summer transfer targets have been delivered.

The Black Cats' campaign finishes with tomorrow afternoon's match at home to Arsenal, but the planning for next term has already begun, with their manager drawing up a shopping list low on numbers but high and quality.

Keane (pictured left) has warned supporters not to expect trophy signings - and hopefully few straightforward ones.

Despite a season in which his squad has been stretched at times, Keane is looking to move on more than the "five to 10" he aims to sign.

"There was nothing to celebrate, I don't see it as a sense of achievement," he said of avoiding relegation. "I must be a miserable person because even as a player when I won trophies it left me very, very quickly. I was out walking my dog when we got promoted (last season) and I carried on walking my dog, I didn't go jumping around or anything like that.

"Maybe it just goes to show how bad the managers have been before you, it doesn't mean you've been that good. I don't think managers should be praised for keeping teams up. It's satisfaction possibly but I want to be happy next year, I want to be further up the table."

When asked what would satisfy him in 12 months, the 36-year-old was less forthcoming. "That will depend on what players we bring in," he replied. "But I've certainly no intention to be in a relegation dogfight every year. We want to be higher up the table and do better in the cups. We want to bring our younger players through but we also need to bring quality players in.

"We'll be getting players we think can take us to the next level. We won't be trying to sign people with a fancy name or long hair just to please people. …
