A FOUR-YEAR-OLD girl may have to have plastic surgery after she was bitten by a dog.

Mackenzie-Lea Walton was staying with family when she was attacked by a Staffordshire bull terrier on the doorstep of their home in Linbridge Drive, West Denton.

The dog, which belonged to visiting friends, lunged at her face and bit into her top lip just minutes after arriving at the house.

With blood pouring from her wound, the snarling dog tried to bite her again but was restrained by its owner.

Mackenzie-Lea was taken to Newcastle General Hospital, where she was in surgery for almost two hours. Doctors found the dog had bitten a hole through the four-year-old's lip and into her palate.

They sewed up the internal damage, but Mackenzie-Lea may still need plastic surgery on her face.

Distraught mum Hayley Walton says she has been told by police the dog will not be put down.

"She has been through hell," said Hayley, 21, who feared for the life of her only child when she was attacked. …
