Labour MPs Plan Move to Lords to Escape Infighting; LABOUR IN TURMOIL

LABOUR insiders have warned that a decision by a North MP to step down at the next election could be repeated as more become "fed up with fighting their own party".

And some of the region's MPs have admitted there are members who are considering trying to get a seat in the House of Lords instead of fighting what is expected to be a difficult election even in Labour's North East heartland.

The decision by Sunderland MP Chris Mullin to retire at the next General Election has prompted speculation that the Labour Party could be losing its grip on the North East, with many members admitting votes are at risk even in some of the region's relatively safe seats.

Mr Mullin said this week that he could no longer see himself carrying out a useful role in Parliament, a feeling other backbench MPs are privately saying they are increasingly likely to agree with.

Now one parliamentary aide has told The Journal there are other MPs considering their position, and that Mr Mullin was among a group who felt the Labour party nationally was not supporting them. …
