THE decision to forego a crack at the 2000 Guineas with Twice Over mystified many after his win in the Craven - but another victory in the totesport.com Dante Stakes at York (2.40) would go some way to justifying the call.

Henry Cecil's youngster impressed in winning two races as a juvenile and stepped up considerably on that form when rallying gamely to deny Raven's Pass on his seasonal reappearance.

He should be afforded a good deal of respect on that alone but there is reason to be hopeful the son of Observatory can find even further improvement now he returns to 10 furlongs.

Twice Over ticks all the right boxes and needs to keep his unblemished record intact if quotes around the 3-1 mark for the Derby are anywhere near accurate.

Promising Lead is likely to be well supported in the totepool Middleton Stakes (2.10) but fully deserves to be after an excellent season in 2007.

She is the exact late-maturing type Sir Michael Stoute does so well with and a close second in Group One company at Longchamp in October reads very well in the context of this race.

Stoute should have a good day, with the progressive Lang Shining taking the eye in the Bank of Scotland Corporate Hambleton Stakes (3.10).

He came from a long way back to win a hot Newbury handicap first time out this season and if he continues to progress, it probably will not be long before we see him running in Pattern races.

The Geoff Wragg-trained Moyenne Corniche is one to keep a very close eye on in the Waggon And Horses Conditions Stakes at Newmarket (8.0).

The Selkirk colt will need to maintain his progress now he steps out of maiden company and this has all the hallmarks of a very smart contest, with plenty of well-regarded horses from powerhouse yards lining up.

Earlier on the card, King's Charm is expected to confirm the positive impression he made on his debut for a Jeremy Noseda team just beginning to fire on all cylinders. …
