Couple Still Have Their Zest for Life; CELEBRATING 65 YEARS OF WEDDED BLISS

HE KNEW within minutes of their meeting that he wanted to marry her.

Now, 65 years after they tied the knot, Sid and Irene Hodgson are still going strong.

But what's the key to their successful marriage?

"The secret is to ignore each other," says Mr Hodgson. "I've learned it's easier to say I'm wrong!"

But there's more to it than that tongue-in-cheek assessment.

The couple met when Sid was just 17 and now, as he approaches his 84th birthday, they are preparing to mark their 65th year as a married couple.

And with nine grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild to keep them on their toes, their enthusiasm for life is strong.

Casting his mind back to the early 1940s, Sid said: "We met at North Shields YMCA. She came down the stairs and a friend introduced me to her. By the time I got to the top of the stairs I said I would marry her."

Despite being in the midst of war, their love flourished. Sid's talents as a carpenter meant he was required in his home town of North Shields.

Despite serving in the Home Guard, he was lucky enough to remain at home while his friends went off to fight. He recalls: "The men went to war and I was left to look after the girls."

Having clearly met Irene's high standards, the couple tied the knot in 1943.

Sid was 19 and Irene 21 when they got married at Christ Church, North Shields, on June 12, 1943. Irene, 86, who used to work for Provident insurance, said: "I can remember making my own wedding dress. I've always being into sewing."

They have lived in North Shields all their lives, both going to the old Linskill School.

Preparations are now gearing up for their party on June 14 at Tynemouth ex-serviceman's club in Howdon Road, North Shields. A tape of old music from their heyday, including White Cliffs of Dover, is being compiled for the celebration. …
