THURSDAY'S by-election in Crewe and Nantwich will not necessarilyprovide any indication of how the next general election will turn out:byelections have a momentum of their own. However, there is no escaping thesignificance of this particular contest.

If the polls are right, the Tories will win. According to an ICM poll in TheGuardian, Labour's support now is at its lowest level since Margaret Thatcher'slandslide victory in 1987. As the Government whip in charge of Labour'scampaign, Stephen McCabe, admits to this paper, "Voters may well take thechance to punish us and if that's what is happening it is very hard to resist."

Even so, this would be the first by-election win for the Tories from Laboursince 1978; for this to happen in a constituency held by as popular an MP asthe late Gwyneth Dunwoody, with a majority of more than 7,000, would indicate asignificant political shift. Every Labour MP with a tight majority will beaware of the implications. …
