JAZZ has been described as the sound of surprise because it's never the same twice.

And it doesn't get more surprising than Jazz North East's On the Outside Festival, taking place from June 6-8, because the musicians have no idea in advance what they're going to play.

Organiser Paul Bream explains: "We invite a group of the world's leading free improvisers to stay for three days, working in combinations with players they may have never met before.

"This is a high wire act without a safety net, and should appeal to anybody who believes that great art has to take risks."

Top players from the USA, Europe and the UK (including Tyneside bass virtuoso Andy Champion) will appear in around 20 different groupings, from duos right up to an 'everybody on stage' blow-out. "This is a totally unique festival," says Paul, "and it can be a challenge for both the musicians and the audience - but for anybody who appreciates the highest level of cutting-edge creativity, it's an absolute must. …
