RISING star Paul McHugh put on a superb display on his first visit to the Pontins Spring Festival at Prestatyn.

Walkergate's McHugh battled his way through the 512-strong field to reach the quarterfinals.

With a first-round bye under his belt, McHugh began his campaign by outscoring Simon Groves, Nathan Shaw, Billy Castle, Alex Taughman and Mark Rowing before being stopped in the last eight by Jamie Cope.

Another fine run came from the former world under-21 champion Gary Wilson.

He opened his account with a classy first-round win against Declan Bristow.

Wilson then beat Kenneth Meyon, Dan Douane and Hytar Sohanpal - before losing out in the last 32 to Lee Page.

Hetton's improving youngster Martin Ball came through two matches by beating Paul Matthews and Graham Cole before losing in the last 128 to Alan Proudman.

Making his debut at the Festival, Gateshead teenager Glen Bowman failed to go past the first hurdle after going out to Brian Sharpe.

Wilson was the only player from the region to compete in the 256-strong Twenty-40 event - and produced fine results to reach the semi-finals.

He took the notable scalps of Joe Dewey, Scot Lord, Joe Chambers, Neil Jones and Paul Davison to reach the last eight.

Wilson then saw off the challenge of WPBSA member Matthew Selt, before being edged out 3-1 by top professional Stuart Bingham.

Stephen Craigie's series of impressive victories over Chris Hoare, Adam Babay, Steve Gregson, Anthony Jeffers and Ryan Coliston in the Under-20 Open event earned the new European under-19 champion a place in the last four, where he was beaten 3-2 in the decider by Mitchell Mann.

Paul McHugh and Glen Bowman both fell first-round victims to respective opponents Tom Saddington and Callum Waite. …
