IF you're painting skirting boards in your home, here's some tips to make sure your finish is spot on.

When decorating a room, work from the ceiling down to stop splashes of paint ruining what you've already done. This means that the skirting boards should be the last thing you tackle, apart from the floor.

It's essential to sand thoroughly before painting - use an electric sander for the flat part of the skirting board and then sandpaper where the sander can't reach (have two or three different grades of sandpaper to hand). Even if the existing paint's in reasonable condition, you still need to sand it to create a matt surface to help the new paint adhere better, especially if the old paint is gloss.

If the skirting boards are in poor condition, you need to scrape and sand off any chipped or cracked paint and fill with a flexible wood filler where required. Sand thoroughly afterwards and wipe clean.

If you're painting over bare wood, either new skirting boards or ones that have been stripped, ensure that you apply a couple of coats of knot-sealing solution to the knots first. This stops the resin from the knots from bleeding through the paintwork and ruining it. Remember to apply primer and undercoat before the topcoat, unless you're using a combined product.

Quick-drying products will make your life much easier.

Use masking tape to protect the walls and floor when painting the skirting boards, but don't leave it on too long as it can form a seal with the dry paint and tear the paint when removed.

Brush in towards the skirting board when painting over the masking tape to help prevent the paint bleeding underneath the tape. You may need to touch up once the tape has been removed to get a neat finish. Check your skirting boards in good light when touching up. …
