This is in regards to "Front page power" in Tuesday's Rants & Raves. I want to give the Times-Union a huge rave for displaying the Confederate flag. Living here in the South, that shows me a time when people were kind and gentle, and worked hard for what they got. They didn't take from others. It was a much more genteel time. People showed respect for each other. It was gaiety instead of the constant sorrows and negativity. ... For the person who said he was canceling his subscription, I'm making up for it by calling in for a subscription.

HOORAY FOR HIS STAND

I would like to comment on the guy who is taking a stand about the Confederate flag. I think it is wonderful that he has done this. I will no longer shop at BJ's.

SAME AS A SWASTIKA

I don't think it's wrong to make him move his truck. The workplace is full of people from all types of backgrounds and beliefs, and just the fact that he would assume that he has the right to display his flag just because he's white seems to be a racist attitude. It's the same as a German displaying a swastika in downtown Jacksonville.

ARE WE A RECYCLE CITY?

I am furious, flabbergasted and dumbfounded. I spent almost two hours cutting several large cardboard boxes into appropriate squares over the weekend. On Sunday evening, I placed them under my blue recycle bin. I carefully and tightly packed my newspapers into a brown paper bag and placed it next to the recycle bin. When I went out to get the newspaper Monday morning, I watched in amazement as the garbage man put the cardboard newspapers, cans, glass and plastic into the back of the garbage truck with the rest of the garbage. Are we a recycle city or not? This is an abomination.

BUSH PRIORITIES WRONG

A concern I have is President Bush campaigning for John McCain. Bush needs to be trying to fix this economy with the high gas prices and everything else that's filtering down. …
