BOOTS and bikes at the ready, the ways to the hills, cliffs, birds and beaches beckon again.

Routes to the great outdoors have all been mapped out for the latest Redcar & Cleveland Walking and Cycling Festival starting a week today until a week on Sunday. Organised by Redcar & Cleveland's parks and countryside team with the North York Moors National Park, Tees Archaeology and the Forestry Commission, the festival will offer long walks, short walks, a long bike ride and even a barbecue.

"Each event is limited to 30 people and starts at a different point around the borough that is easily reached by public transport," says Redcar & Cleveland's countryside access officer Naomi Dillon (pictured).

"The barbecue a week tonight is free. It's a taster with two short walks and everyone can come, but there is a charge for everything else.

"For each walk and the ride, this is pounds 2 adults, pounds 1 children under 16, and pounds 5 family (two adults and two children).

"Bookings are going very well but there are still a few places left on all the walks."

The circular by cycle is around Redcar a week today, while the barbecue is at 6pm a week tonight.

Walkers can enjoy a round trip from Saltburn via Skelton; join Tees Archaeology at work on a secluded beach; head to Eston Nab to hear about history and conservation; take the monumental route from Roseberry Topping to Captain Cook's Monument; see a seabird breeding colony; go inside an historic church and hear how industry destroyed a village.

Those taking part will need suitable clothing and footwear, and should bring waterproofs, drink and a packed lunch.

"When you book for a walk or the cycle ride, you will get details of the starting point," adds Naomi.
