NEWCASTLE Diamonds have parted company with Ben Powell - the day after his 28-day suspension for missing a match at Glasgow ended.

The news will come as a shock to many Sapphire Engineering Diamonds fans.

However, promoters Darryl Illingworth, Darren Bond and George English have taken a hard line with the Australian, who failed to turn up at Glasgow citing transport problems.

In last month's match, already without the injured George Stancl, the Diamonds were reduced to just five men when Powell failed to show - but amazingly won the Premier League contest 46-44 despite having to go into three races with only one rider.

Powell was deemed to be withholding his services and suspended, and though the Diamonds were allowed guest cover for him in subsequent matches it was not a success.

Powell is set to sign for Scunthorpe and will become the fifth former Newcastle man in the Scorpions' ranks, joining Richard Hall, Carl Wilkinson, Byron Bekker and Benji Compton in what has become a home from home for ex-Diamonds. …
