A SHOPKEEPER who risked his life to try to save Jane and Georgia has now launched an appeal to help them get their lives back on track following the blaze which destroyed all their belongings.

And the whole community has rallied round bringing in toys, children's clothes and cash by the sackful to Greentree News after newsagent John McClurey started a collection.

Hearing their screams, Mr McClurey climbed a ladder and smashed his way into their house in a desperate bid to rescue the screaming pair, but was beaten back by the smoke. He then dived in through the front door as the fire crews arrived.

Now, after their home was gutted by the fire, he has started a collection to help them rebuild their lives.

In just one week more than pounds 200 was donated by people who were touched by their loss.

Mr McClurey, 53, of Sunniside, Gateshead, is now enjoying a wellearned break, but newsagent shop assistant Kelly Glendenning said: "People have been so generous. …
