A CHARITY fundraiser whose van was written off in a smash with a police vehicle today told of his devastation at not being able to continue his bid to raise cash for a sick little boy.

Builder Graham Chapell was escorting a team of cyclists on a charity ride from Edinburgh to Leeds when the crash happened on the A696 at Woolsington, Northumberland, just after 6am yesterday.

Their journey was to raise cash for the Lucus Charity, set up to raise funds for a Leeds toddler with a rare type of cancer.

But now Mr Chapell, who had to be cut from his van and placed on a stretcher and his two passengers, cannot continue.

He said: "It was a clear day, there was nothing on the road and we were travelling at very low speeds.

"It's quite lucky as the van had to keep a distance of about 15 yards from the cyclists, so we are fortunate it was not worse. …
