HE'S called Michael Owen, he's the top goal scorer for his football club - and he's just nine years old.

Mini Michael, who was named after the Toon's star striker, is celebrating after smashing in a whopping 86 goals for Birtley Town under-nines.

The pocket rocket helped his Gateshead squad trounce their rivals to win 28 out of 30 games last season.

The youngster, full name Michael Owen Lough, of Barley Mow, Birtley, says he won't stop training until he achieves the professional heights of his Toon ace idol.

He said: "All I want is to be a professional football player.

Michael Owen is my favourite striker and I would love to eventually play in the Premiership.

"The season has been fantastic.

I've just been trying my hardest all the time but I want to try and get more than 86 goals next year."

Birtley Town team coach Kevin Hodgson said: "He's very modest.

Eighty-six goals is more than double what you would normally expect even for a very skilled striker of his age.

"The next highest goal scorer we've ever had got probably about 30 goals.

"He's got a great attitude and he's a great finisher - just like Michael Owen senior."

Birtley Town climbed up the table to win the league this year, and Kevin says with Michael Owen's help they should be well on track to do the same again.

It is hoped NUFC talent scouts will notice the young prodigy next season. Unfortunately, Michael missed the only game they showed up for recently.

Michael's mum Dianne said: "Since he was about six months old all he's done is chase footballs around. I'm the proudest mother in the world.

"His dad loves Michael Owen and he's a family hero really, so that's where the name comes from.

"We go to the ground every week. I don't think I've ever missed a game. …
