BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art opens its largest exhibition of the summer season, Yoshitomo Nara + graf, on Saturday June 14.

The vast Level 4 gallery space has been transformed by the Japanese artist into a mesmerising imaginary village containing three large wooden structures which house his drawings and paintings.

Yoshitomo Nara's work embodies a defiant spirit that comes with youthful optimism and belief that we can change the world. He is best known for his deceptively simple drawings, paintings and sculptures of children with apparently innocent kawaii or cute expressions.

Visitors to BALTIC may already be familiar with his work from the bold vinyl drawings which have been on show in BALTIC's learning facility quay since it opened in July 2007.

The exhibition's large and complex building process has been on show to visitors from the level 5 viewing platform throughout May, but the very first opportunity to see inside the exhibition and explore the buildings will take place at the VIP exhibition preview on Wednesday June 11. …
