Posey Bound for the Bay; but It's San Francisco, Not Tampa, for FSU Catcher, Who's Picked by Giants at No.5

TALLAHASSEE - Buster Posey learned early Thursday that he wouldn't be the No. 1 overall pick in the Major League Baseball Draft when the Tampa Bay Rays placed a courtesy call to him.

However, Florida State's All-American junior catcher didn't have to wait long for his dream to be fulfilled.

The San Francisco Giants selected Posey at No. 5, setting off a raucous celebration in the Seminoles' clubhouse.

"We got to hear 'Gerald D. Posey' on TV," said Posey, a Leesburg, Ga., native who was joined by his parents, girlfriend and teammates to watch the draft. "It was a great feeling to see how excited my parents were. I think it was a little nerve-racking for my girlfriend, but it's something I'll always remember."

FSU coach Mike Martin said it was a special moment.

"It's the first standing ovation a team has ever given an individual player since I've been here," said Martin, who's in his 29th season with the Seminoles. "I just think it's a clear indication of what his teammates and coaches thought ... when they stood up and applauded the young man that is certainly deserving of everything he's received so far."

There likely will be more honors in the near future for Posey, who's a finalist for the Golden Spikes and Dick Howser national player of the year awards, and the Johnny Bench Award, which is presented to the nation's top catcher.

Posey has posted impressive numbers en route to collecting All-American and Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Year honors. Fresh off earning NCAA regional MVP honors this past week, he enters today's Super Regional opener against Wichita State hitting .468 with 24 homers and 86 RBI on the season.

"It's kind of like getting two players in one," Giants general manager Brian Sabean told of picking Posey. "It's very, very difficult to get an all-around catcher, especially a run-producer."

Sabean spoke with Posey shortly after he was selected, as did Giants owner Peter Magowan and John Barr, the director of scouting. Barr, formerly with the Los Angeles Dodgers, has tracked Posey since his junior year at Lee County High School.

"When you're trying to build a winning team, this is the type of player that we think can help us achieve that goal," Barr told "He was in our consideration for this selection since the day I accepted the position."

Barr is no stranger to the FSU program. He was responsible for making former Seminoles pitcher Paul Wilson the No. 1 overall pick in 1994 when Barr was with the New York Mets.

The ties between the Giants and Seminoles don't stop there. …
