A DEPLETED Gateshead delighted team manager Janice Kaufman after finishing sixth in the opening fixture of the UK Women's League Division Four at Spytty Park in Newport yesterday.

Gateshead travelled with a skeleton squad of just eight athletes, with Kaufman having to compete in three events in an attempt to pick up as many points as possible.

In the end, a sixth-place finish, ahead of Ashford and host club Newport, was more than could have been expected considering how slimmed down the team was.

"I'm absolutely over the moon with the team's efforts," said Kaufman on her return from the long journey back from Wales.

"We were always going to be up against it, but everyone rallied round.

"To finish sixth with just eight recognised athletes just shows how well we could do if we had a full compliment.

"Hopefully, this will give us a boost for our next fixture in Coventry next month."

Kaufman herself picked up much-needed points by taking her place in the hammer, discus and javelin. …
