IT has been a fantastic week for carp catches throughout the region but few anglers have done better than Carl Goff who amassed 251lb of carp through catching only 15 fish, including a trio of specimens over 20lb from Longtown's Oakbank Fishery.

The TAA's Killingworth Lake has yielded carp to 20lb recently and last week an angler fishing Marden Quarry landed a 20lb-plus carp. However the angler missed out on a potential prize - if he had been a BWAC member he would have been in line for the pounds 100 prize gifted by ID Tackle for best carp caught in 2008 on a Big Waters fishery by a club member.

Carping success continued on Bowes Lake where John Rogerson took four 20lb plus carp, two mirrors and two commons as well as six other doubles in one session, while Lookout Lake has been fishing very well.

Norman Eden, with his son, Chris, had a great day's fishing, catching in excess of 80 to 100 fish each with Norman taking 10 carp, eight crucians, three tench above 3lb, as well as lots of skimmers, rudd, roach and ide.

Steve Shilling, fishing peg 16, took tench to 3lb 8oz, a ghost carp of 7lb, 20 carp to 5lb and mixed bag of silvers.

It has been a great week at Whittle Dene with all lakes fishing well, especially the Great Southern, where Brian Evans took a 17lb 4oz mixed net.

The penultimate match in the Spring Series on Whittle Dene saw a tense peg to peg battle between local matchman Peter Hamilton and Bob Ramshaw. Peter took the victory with 16lb 4oz of skimmers, roach and a bonus 1lb carp from peg 24 to pole and maggot. Bob, runnerup from the adjoining peg, netted 15lb of skimmers and perch, while third spot went to Martin Robson with 5lb 13oz.

Stanley and District Angling Club fished a match on Lookout where 'Stewy' Stewart won with 51lb 13oz, ahead of Dennis Burdon with 45lb 1oz.

Peter Smith, with 24lb, won the Wednesday match on the Angel while the Bowes Open was won by junior Anthony Longstaff with 27lb 10oz. …
