THE burning question in the 3D Durham Coast League is whether the time is approaching when the old guard will have to make way for the new kids on the block.

As recent past masters Murton and Castle Eden were slugging it out with each other last Saturday, Ryhope were racking up their fifth win of the season.

And in the process, they took over the leadership reins.

It is six years since anyone's name but Murton and Castle Eden was engraved on the championship trophy, and 12 since Ryhope had their hands on the pot.

But Ryhope's Mattie Summerside said: "Obviously the season has gone very well. The players are playing for the team and all are contributing in one way or another.

"We believe we have found the ideal position for Phil Bennett now that he is opening the batting and doing very well, and other batsmen are doing their bit - Lee Gilbert, Paul Howe, Arjun Purewal and Andy Pettey have all been in the runs.

"When it comes to our bowling attack the wickets are being shared about, but the brunt of the bowling is being carried by Steve Wright. …
