BORO superfan Alastair Brownlee returns to the mic next season to take over match day commentary duties on BBC Tees.

Here, the 'Voice of the Boro' recounts his best recollections of the Sports Gazette and how it helped to develop his love for the club over the years.

"Back in those days, there was no 24/7 news service on the internet or television, so the Sports was essential if you wanted to know what had happened.

"And if Boro were playing away then it was the only way you could find out what had happened really.

"Like a lot of youngsters I used to keep scrapbooks of newspaper cuttings and match reports so I loved getting it back then."

While numerous writers have contributed to the Sports Gazette over the years, for Ali there is one name from the Gazette's and Boro's past which stands out.

"One of the great names from the Middlesbrough press box was Cliff Mitchell," Ali said. …
