WEST BROM are ready to grant Newcastle United striker Shola Ameobi his wish of staying in the Premier League.

The newly-promoted Midlands outfit want to take the former England Under-21 international to The Hawthorns when he returns from his honeymoon next week.

But Tony Mowbray and his board will have to match the pounds 4m package United had agreed with another of the promoted teams, Stoke city.

The Chronicle revealed last month that Ameobi had turned down the chance to make the move to the Potteries permanently, and after Ipswich put together a pounds 3.5m package they have lost interest.

Reports today that Norwich City boss Glenn Roeder had come up with a similar package to take Ameobi to Carrow Road are wide of the mark because the former Newcastle manager simply does not have that sort of money to spend on one player.

And while the other promoted team, Hull City, have also been eyeing Ameobi, the wages he would get down there are about one-third of what he picks up at St James's Park. …
