HITCHING up the skirt or rolling up the trousers and dipping toes in the water during a hot summer's day.

It's the essence of a lovely day spent at the beach.

But those days seem a distant memory for some residents living in North Tyneside.

They say a day on the beach has been spoilt by drunken louts and are calling for a ban on drinking alcohol on the sand.

More than 1,100 people from the Cullercoats area have signed a petition, started by resident Anna Tooke. It will be handed in to the council next week.

It says: "We, the undersigned, call upon North Tyneside Council and Northumbria Police to implement a prohibition on the consumption of alcohol on the beaches of North Tyneside."

Alan Reid, a dad-of-two, of Cullercoats, said: "Everybody here is sick of the trouble caused by drinking on the coast.

"The Metro is quite close, so youths just hop off, buy some drink and head for the beach."

There have been several incidents involving drunken people over the past few months.

In May, bullies put the life of a 12-year-old boy in danger at Cullercoats Bay. It is understood a group of people, adults as well as youngsters, were drinking.

A disturbance broke out and a 12-year-old was forced to stand in the icy sea for 45 minutes.

The group refused to let him back on the beach and the Tynemouth Volunteer Life Brigade was called.

And, in April, yobs had to be rescued after getting cut off by the sea. Seven teenagers had climbed over a fence on the sea wall at Whitley Bay.

They had downed 10 litres of cider. When police and lifesavers turned up to rescue them, the group began brawling among themselves and started hurling abuse at those trying to save their lives.

Will Hogg, from the brigade, is against a total ban of alcohol.

He said: "My view is that there should not be a total ban on alcohol. …
