If you've wondered what all the construction near the northwest corner of Race Track Road and State Road 13 is about, wonder no more.

Bartram Walk West is a new shopping center being planned by Gate Petroleum, the same company that developed the Bartram Walk shopping plaza on the northeast corner of the same intersection. Once fully constructed, the area will be home to more than 17 acres of shops and restaurants.

The center is still in its early stages, with only necessary infrastructure and landscaping being developed. Drew Frick, vice president of GL National, Inc., Gate's development company, said the company planned the shopping area because it believes northwest St. Johns County is an under-served retail market.

Russ Ervin, of the architectural firm Ervin Lockett & Miller, which designed both centers, said he sees the area as the gateway to northwest St. Johns County. The firm designed the new center to mimic Bartram Walk while also maintaining a sense of individuality. …
