MORE Brazilian business could be in the pipeline for Teesside firm Siemens VAI.

The Stockton-based company's links with the South American country go back to the late 1970s when it clinched its first blast furnace project.

The Teesside office - which is home to the Siemens VAI Metals Technologies business - is currently in the early stages of bidding for a major contract with steel producer Usiminas.

The pounds 100m project will be capable of producing an average 4.15 million tonnes a year.

"Brazil is one of, if not the biggest producer of iron ore in the world," said director of ironmaking, Geoff Wingrove.

"It's a very mineral rich country. Although it exports a lot, there is also continued investment in its own iron and steel business."

When VAI took over the business from Kvaerner in 1999 it inherited a contract with Brazilian steel giant CSN involving a major blast furnace re-build.

And last year it constructed a new furnace for steel manufacturer CST. …
