Cats Star Expects Kids to Blossom

WHILE SUNDERLAND supporters are still eagerly awaiting Roy Keane's first signing of the summer, Nyron Nosworthy has suggested some exciting new faces for next season are already at the club.

Sunderland's Academy side reached the semi-finals of the FA Youth Cup and finished top of the Barclay's Academy North Division in a highly productive year for the youth set-up under coaches Ged McNamee and Kevin Ball.

That success saw several of the club's promising teenagers make their first inroads into the first-team set-up under Keane - 18-year-old Martyn Waghorn leading the way with a senior start against Manchester United on Boxing Day.

But, while Waghorn was the most visible graduate from the youth team, several others are expected to make their presence felt in the Premier League next season with defenders Nathan Luscombe and Michael Kay, along with midfielders Conor Hourihane, Jordan Cook and Jack Colback all impressing Keane last term.

There are few sights in football which are more popular among supporters than watching a home-grown talent blossom in the first team and Keane - who will be looking for more improvements from another former youth team player Grant Leadbitter next season - has promised to give youth its chance at the Stadium of Light.

It is a strategy which has been enthusiastically backed by Sunderland's vice-captain Nyron Nosworthy, who believes it is vital a club with Sunderland's regional focus has players the supporters can easily identify with.

"It's great for the club to have so many young players coming through," said Nosworthy, who remains one of the most popular players at the Stadium of Light despite his London roots.

"The manager has brought a few of them up to train with us and they have travelled to games with us as well. I think that's important because it shows them what they can achieve if they work hard and do the right things. …
