THE Romanian government was today deciding whether to allow an11-year-old girl to travel to Britain for an abortion.

The girl, who says she was raped by her 19-year-old uncle, is 20 weeks pregnantwhich is beyond the 14-week legal limit for abortion in her own country.

A Romanian government committee was today making a decision on whether she mustcontinue with the pregnancy.

Theodora Bertzi, a labour ministry official on the committee, said: "We aretalking about the rights of this child, who was subjected to rape and incest."The girl's parents discovered the girl was pregnant this month after they tookher to a doctor when she was unwell. She told doctors she had been raped by heruncle, who has since disappeared.

In Romania, abortions can be carried out after 14 weeks only to save the lifeof the mother. An abortion is legal up to 24 weeks in Britain if two doctorsdecide that the risk to a woman's physical or mental health will be greater ifshe continues with the pregnancy than if she ends it. …
