TO A from Newbiggin Hall, this letter has taken me a while to write as it brings back bad memories.

I was attacked in a part of Newcastle and sexually assaulted 60 years ago when I was a boy. After a few days I decided that it had happened and there was nothing I could do about it so I gradually pushed it into the back of my mind. The Police did not find the man involved and so I had not the satisfaction of seeing that person punished.

Rape is nastly thing and it does not matter if you are young or old, male or female, it leaves you feeling dirty, corrupted, soiled, guilty, angry and disgusted. You have a bath and you scrub and scrub to get rid of the contamintation and you wish you could pour acid over yourself to clean away the dirt you feel is there. You are full of fear and loathing and cannot sleep for the horror that comes with sleep. …
