SLAIN beat bobby Joe Carroll was honoured with a permanent tribute.

PC Carroll, 46, was killed when his vehicle overturned near Corbridge, Northumberland, after a prisoner he was transporting pulled on the handbrake.

Crowds of mourners attended a ceremony yesterday to see the memorial stone unveiled at the Styford Roundabout, close to the scene of the accident.

PC Carroll's widow, Caroline, made a tearful speech, and there were words too from the Chief Constable of Northumbria Police Mike Craik, and director and film producer Michael Winner, founder of the Police Memorial Trust.

Mrs Carroll said: "Many of you knew Joe, and for those of you who didn't, your lives are poorer.

Joe Carroll was my sweetheart, my soulmate, and I miss him.

"He loved the great outdoors.

The Northumberland fells captured his heart. He was loved throughout the whole comm unity."

Mr Craik said: "He was killed doing the job he loved, in the place he loved, surrounded by the people he loved. …
