Dan the Man to Teach Rugby Stars of Tomorrow

GATESHEAD Thunder hooker Dan Smith has linked up with Gateshead College to teach the sports stars of tomorrow.

The former Australian Universities player has already been teaching at the college, getting involved with tag rugby and other duties, but will extend his role next semester.

A former secondary school PE teacher in Australia before he switched to Thunder last season, 26-year-old Smith will teach students on the First Diploma in Sport at the college's pounds 15m Academy for Sport, which is home to more than 300 students.

Based at Gateshead Stadium, Sydney University Human Movement and Health Education graduate Smith does not have much of a commute - but he said it was a welcome distraction and different challenge from professional rugby.

Smith said: "It has been excellent working at the college already, because it gives you something totally different to focus on.

"I taught a lot back home and it is always something I have wanted to continue to pursue if possible, so I am grateful for the chance.

"The link came about through the club, who put me forward for an interview and it all went from there.

"I always enjoyed teaching PE, but this new role here is something which probably suits me better and is more closely related to where my interests lie.

"When I finish up in rugby I wil look to follow a career in sport of some description, so this is perfect."

Thunder head coach Woods brought Smith to Gateshead after coaching him at New South Wales Universities ahead of last season, and Smith said he is relishing his time on Tyneside.

Smith said: "It is a great region, because it can be quiet when you want it to be or busy when it suits you too, so you get the best of both worlds.

"The facilities at the college are great as well and all the students are really passionate about sport. …
