ESSEX have joined the race to sign in-demand Worcestershire opener Stephen Moore.

The Eagles have become the fifth county to give Worcestershire 28 days notice of approach to speak to the highly talented 27-year-old batsman, who is enjoying a prolific season.

The Friends Provident Trophy and Twenty20 Cup finalists join Sussex, Derbyshire, Northants and Glamorgan in expressing an interest in the South Africanborn player.

But Moore has intimated he would like to remain with the Royals, who expect to hold talks with the player and his agent regarding a new contract.

Worcestershire chief executive Mark Newton explained: "Stephen has said he wants to play his cricket at Worcester and we want him to play out his career here. But five counties want to speak to him.

"When that happens to any player, they just want to see what the ramifications are.

"But cricketers don't tend to move unless there is a really compelling reason to move.

"That boils down to two things - playing regularly in the first team and money. …
