ALASKA PROJECT LOOKS FORWARD

Cathy Parker's year-long quest to put a turf football field in tiny Barrow, Alaska just ended last August, but she's already taking on another project.

Project Alaska is giving way to a new group, Athletes 2 Champions. The goal of the group is its motto, Play it Forward.

The group has a 10-person board and a mission: Help as many people through athletics as possible. One of its board members arranged for 31 children to attend a Carolina Panthers mini-camp earlier this month.

Also planned is a baseball clinic called Power Cross in Statesville, N.C. The group arranged for 40 at-risk children between the ages of 9 and 11 - the majority of them from single-family households - to spend three days with numerous college baseball players and coaches.

CONTRACTOR TO BE SENTENCED

A local contractor who moved to California with money from unfinished construction projects will get 32 months in prison when he is formally sentenced on July 24. John Jay Converse, 54, and his wife, Frances Erlene Converse, 55, were charged with scamming two dozen customers and subcontractors when they left St. Johns County for Foster City, Calif., in 2007. John Converse pleaded no contest to 11 felonies Tuesday in St. Johns County Circuit Court. His prison term will be followed by 10 years probation, according to the agreement reached with the prosecution. His wife will plead and hear her sentence when she returns to court on July 24. She is expected to get a year in St. Johns County jail, followed by 10 years probation.

TRERARD THOMPSON NAMED TOP TRACK ATHLETE

St. Augustine High School's Trerard Thompson always kept his focus on track. Unlike many other high school sprinters, he didn't play football. He said he was asked to countless times, but stuck to track because of his love for running.
