Mourners' Farewell to a Teesside Hero

MOVING tributes were paid to a Teesside RAF veteran and loving husband, father and grandad, during his military funeral.

Dennis Coupland, a former fighter pilot who organised the fly-past for the Queen's Coronation in 1953, died at the age of 84. He was remembered at Teesside Crematorium yesterday.

An RAF and union flag was draped over the coffin as one of only 1,000 Master Pilots was carried into the chapel. A pilot's hat lay on top along with bouquet of red carnations.

Standard bearers raised their flags, which displayed the names of Cleveland's Korean veterans, Middlesbrough and district Far East Veterans and the British Legion. Throughout the service they stood in watch over Dennis, as his life of adventure was celebrated.

The Reverend Michael Proctor spoke of Dennis, the last surviving of eight children and father of two daughters, as a man who achieved a great deal and who would be missed greatly.

Eulogies were read by Dennis' grandsons Stephen and Mark - two of his six grandchildren. …
