A NEIGHBOUR of ours has just fitted a solar panel to his roof. He says he has done it for the environment and he thinks it is time more of us took the plunge and used solar energy. It fits in with his current boiler and heats a separate tank on the first floor.

It will probably heat about 60% of his hot water during the course of a year. At present it is heating the water up to around 55 degrees, leaving only around 15 degrees of extra heating to bring it up to 70 degrees.

I went up onto the roof for a look at the shiny new piece of technology.

The panel measures around 1.6 metres by 1.6 metres and is fitted at an angle to a flat roof.

They can also be secured to a pitched roof.

The whole job of installing the panel and the tank and plumbing took two days.

With the price of oil and gas rising so steeply, more and more people are taking the decision to use solar power for water heating. …
