Football: Cats' Bid for Goian Falters over Fee

SUNDERLAND'S move for Steaua Bucharest's Romania defender Dorin Goian appears to have collapsed after the two clubs failed to reach an agreement on his fee.

The Black Cats were hopeful of negotiating a deal for the 27-year-old centre-back after offering EUR3m last week, and were greatly heartened by the player's apparent desire to play in the Premier League. But The Journal has been informed by sources in Romania a continuing row over Goian's valuation has angered Sunderland manager Roy Keane and thrown any prospective transfer into disarray.

It seems the deal is now unlikely to be resurrected unless Sunderland increase their bid to EUR3.5m. Steaua had hoped to reclaim the VAT on the transfer fee to make up the difference, but although there was some optimism at the start of the week they may be able to do so, there has been little progress on that front. Although the deal could still be pushed through if Sunderland do increase their offer Keane, who is understood to be unwilling to sanction an improved offer, is now ready to move on to other targets.

A further threat to the deal has emerged in the form of Dinamo Kiev, who are keen to bring Goian in to help them reclaim the Ukranian title they lost last season. Kiev, who are involved in the Champions League qualifying rounds later this month, can offer the player European football.

Sunderland's reticence to increase their bid has also alerted a number of French Ligue 1 clubs, who were impressed by the defender's central role in shutting out national coach Raymond Domenech's Euro 2008 flops in last month's tournament in Austria and Switzerland. It leaves the Black Cats struggling to match their target of adding two new faces to their squad before they jet out to Portugal for their two-game tour, which starts on Sunday. …
