VULNERABLE Gateshead residents are benefiting from a new training initiative which is improving management of the social services team at Gateshead Council.

Thirty-one managers from the community-based services and learning and children services at Gateshead Council completed a professional management qualification to help them better manage people and resources within the division and out in the local community.

The Chartered Management Institute's diploma in supervisory management was delivered by South Tyneside College at the council's offices in Gateshead.

It equips students with invaluable management and people skills, which improve staff communication, as well as helping the development of working practices and providing a better understanding of financial management. This ultimately results in improvements in efficiency and effectiveness.

Thanks to the skills learnt on the course, vulnerable clients are already benefiting from quicker response times to queries, more motivated and focused supervisors and managers, improvements to services, and greater inclusion of vulnerable adults in the community.

Margaret Whellans, group director of community-based services at Gateshead Council, said: "We are always looking to improve the way we run our department and investing in our employees and boosting their skills is a cost effective way of ensuring we have the very best human resources for the job. …
