PM Blocks Rise for Man Who Exposed Expenses

GORDON BROWN today blocked a [pounds sterling]41,000 pay rise for the Information Commissioner amid fears it could destroy his bid to keep a lid on wage increases for millions of workers.

Labour MPs were furious that Richard Thomas was set to get a salary increase of more than 40 per cent to [pounds sterling]140,000 a year.

Justice Secretary Jack Straw had tabled an order to push through the rise but MPs threatened to scupper the move in a vote next Monday.

The pay deal, due to be backdated to last November, has now been delayed until at least autumn. Officials cited the need to wait for the outcome of a consultation into the Information Commissioner's powers hours after the Standard revealed details of the rise.

Some MPs blame Mr Thomas for forcing them to publish details of their expenses on second homes and travel, some of which have proved very embarrassing. Blocking the pay rise could partly be seen as revenge. …
