Super-Shrewd Hannon Can Strike Again

NEVER look a gift horse in the mouth is the advice ahead of tomorrows Weatherbys Super Sprint at Newbury (3.25) as ante-post favourite PENNYS GIFT appears thrown in at the weights to provide trainer Richard Hannon with an amazing seventh win in the race.

This is one of the few races where the trainer effectively handicaps his own horse, as the weight it carries is determined by its purchase price and with the speedy Pennys Gift costing a mere 10,000 guineas at public auction, she only has to shoulder the featherweight of eight stone.

Hannon has long been one of the shrewdest trainers at unearthing bargains at the sales and his six winners in this five-furlong contest are evidence that the Marlborough handler has few rivals when it comes to buying at the cheap end of the market.

Even if every runner in this race were to run off level weights the daughter of Tobougg would still be sent off a short price as she finished an excellent second to Cuis Ghaire at Royal Ascot and that filly is favourite for next years 1,000 Guineas. …
