Newcastle Keeper to Go Dutch Again

AFTER 12 months accumulating some of Europe's most sought after young players, Newcastle United are set to lose one of their most promising talents to Holland's Eredivisie.

The club signed 20-year-old goalkeeper Tim Krul from Den Haag three years ago, a precursor to the policy they have stepped up since Mike Ashley bought United last summer. Under their new owner the Magpies have adopted a strategy of identifying and signing the best young footballers before they mature to the point where they are out of their price range.

That was the plan with Krul when Graeme Souness signed him but it now looks as though Newcastle have a fight on their hands if they are to see the fruits of their labour.

Heerenveen, Feyenoord and Chelsea are all interested in signing Krul this summer and, while Newcastle would prefer to let him leave on loan, the Dutchman favours a clean break. And it is the former club he wants to join - although he has not ruled out Feyenoord either.

While Chelsea prevaricate over a move, the Frisians have tabled a pounds 2m move and that appears to have swayed the player.

"This is a club that offered the most to me," he told the Dutch media. "So that already gives me a special feeling.

"If Feyenoord make an offer, I am always open to a beautiful adventure in the south of Rotterdam. But we are as good as there (with Heerenveen)."

Krul spent last season on loan to Scottish Premier League side Falkirk and that appears to have whetted his appetite for first-team football. The trouble is, since he has been away, United have signed another promising goalkeeper in Ole Soderberg and given Hexham-born Fraser a regular seat on the bench when Shay Given was injured late in the campaign.

Piet de Visser has nominated the Dutch Under-20 international as Edwin van der Sar's long-term replacement. Having brought Romario and Ronaldo to PSV Eindhoven, the scout's opinion is extremely highly-regarded and as one of Roman Abramovich's cabal of "advisers", he has undoubtedly influenced Chelsea's interest. …
