Letter: VOICE OF THE NORTH - Musical Play Could Be Used to Help Raise Funds for Historic Hall Purchase

ISN'T it strange when two events that initially appear disparate seem to come together or coincide? Perhaps physicists would say that is yet another proof of chaos theory.

In this instance, I am referring to the wonderful musical play Those Delavals! written by Roger Burgess, with music arranged by Bob Jeffrey, performed earlier this year by the Tynemouth Priory Theatre, and the news that Lord Hastings wants to sell Seaton Delaval Hall.

The preferred new owners are the National Trust, if they can raise the funding. The cogs inside my head immediately started to whirl and twirl as my brain began to work on how this could be achieved.

Building on an idea I expressed in an earlier letter, I believe Roger's play could be used in the fundraising campaign for a magnificent, local amenity which has so much potential for the right kind of arts and tourist development. It could also be staged in other locations (it would be perfect in Richmond's Theatre Royal) and throughout the country, particularly at National Trust properties. …
