MARCUS Burghardt profited from a transitional day in the Tour to claim victory on the 18th stage from Bourg d'Oisans to St Etienne.

Burghardt caught solo escapee Carlos Barredo 94km into the 197km stage and held off the Spaniard's late dash in the closing metres to secure Team Columbia's fifth stage win of the Tour. Carlos Sastre came through the stage unscathed to retain the yellow jersey and an 84-second lead over CSC colleague Frank Schleck.


ANDY Murray knows he will need one of the best victories of his career later today if he is to beat Novak Djokovic and reach the semi-finals of the Rogers Cup in Toronto.

The British No 1 battled to a 6-2 0-6 6-4 win over Stanislas Wawrinka in the third round yesterday.

Murray then returned to the court with brother Jamie for their second-round doubles match against Daniel Nestor and Nenad Zimonjic, with the duo crashing out to a 7-6 (7/3) 6-4 defeat.
