LAST week, this column focused on the recommendations of the Business and Enterprise Committee's Construction Matters review of the sector and the need for a chief construction officer to mirror such posts as that of chief medical officer.

While handled correctly and with the right powers this would be a good move, it is just one part of a growing momentum for a stronger voice for the sector.

Our industry contributes nine per cent of the UK's GDP and is under-represented at the highest levels, so the proposition for the chief construction officer is a sound one, in light of there never having been a dedicated construction minister.

Around the same time as this review was announced, the CBI announced its intention to establish its Construction Council, headed by Carillion chief executive John McDonough.

This new body will bring together representatives from across the industry, including smaller companies. As a member of the CBI, the National Federation of Builders is looking forward to working with the new Construction Council to support and represent the interests of small and medium-sized contractors.

However, the CBI announcement means the Construction Confederation faces a debate on its future. …
