Police News; Man Arrested for Aggravated Battery

Article excerpt

A 71-year-old woman was shoved and harassed late Monday during an argument that ended with the ground around her home in the 8900 block of San Rae Road doused with gasoline but not set ablaze.

Now a 49-year-old man has been arrested on charges of aggravated battery and resisting arrest without violence after the incident, which left the elderly woman flat on her back after she was shoved, police said.

The incident started at 11 p.m., when the man became angry because the victim, his mother, refused to take him to a store to buy beer, police said. The man has lived in a shed in his mother's backyard for the past six months "because she felt sorry for him," according to the police report.

The victim went to bed, but the man began beating on her windows. When the victim went outside to quiet her son down, he "went into a rage" and shoved her so hard she lifted off her feet and fell down, hitting her head, according to the police report. The man also poured gasoline around the house and in the flower beds, a friend staying in the house told officers. The friend said she was unsure if he was going to burn down the house.

When police arrived, they smelled the gas and found the man near the shed, yelling that they would "have to shoot me and drag me out of here," according to the report. When he was arrested and put in the back seat of a police cruiser, he tried to break a back window and resisted being handcuffed until an officer and sergeant got him on the ground, police said.

The man was booked into the county jail on $20,000 bail, with a court date set for Aug. 13, according to jail records.

Following are crimes and other incidents reported recently in the Mandarin area, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office:

- A shotgun was the weapon used late July 16 during an armed robbery in an apartment complex at 4320 Sunbeam Road.

Police said a 27-year-old man was talking on his cell phone in an outside hallway at 11:20 p.m. when two men walked up and asked if he knew someone on the floor. The victim said he didn't and turned to walk away, when he heard someone follow him. He turned around to find a shotgun pointed at his head.

The victim grabbed the barrel and fought with one of the two men, until they hit him. When he dropped his cell phone, the pair grabbed it and ran. The victim had cuts on his hand from grabbing the gun barrel.

- A 39-year-old Mandarin woman was arrested late July 20 on a charge of offering or engaging in prostitution following a police investigation at an apartment at 9900 Oldfield Crossing Drive, police said.

The Sheriff's Office vice squad was conducting an investigation into prostitution, and responded to a listing on an escort service Web site, police said. The undercover detective was sent to the Mandarin apartment, where a woman offered to have sex with him for $300, according to the arrest report. …
