MORE than 200 junior players took to the court for the annual Ponteland Open Championships - the fifth successive year entries had seen an increase.

Sponsored by Horton Grange Country House Hotel, the tournament attracted 336 entries across different age categories, the introduction of the under-eight and undernine categories in particular proving very popular.

Players travelled from far and wide, with under-12 player Dan Dowson making the longest trek - from Sydney, Australia.

Ponteland Tennis Club members were in nine of the 23 finals and managed to collect the winners trophies in four events.

Ben Pearson claimed the boys' under-16 singles, beating Robert DaCosta from Lancashire, and the boys' doubles with Thomas Sharp.

Michael Sharp won the under-19 boys' singles and narrowly missed out on the doubles in a very close three-seater with Simon Morrison.

The under-14 doubles was won by Jack Heslop and Sandy Robson.

Jack also reached the finals in the under-12 singles, but on set point down in the first set was forced to retire injured.

In the under-12 girls' doubles, Ella Ramshaw and Beth Morgan were runnersup to Elizabeth Bradley and Bethany Smiles from Durham. In the under-14 girls' doubles, Francine Clark and Chloe Hall were runners-up to Rachel Farrey and Emily Kate Miller from Blaydon.

Emma Watson and Amy Hoburn from the Northumberland Club were runners-up in the under-16 girls' doubles to Jayne and Rachel Oswald - also from the Northumberland club.

North Tyneside players also enjoyed several successes, James Parkin winning the under-nine boys' singles and Dan Simpson the under-11 boys' singles plus the under-12 doubles with Jacob Docx.

Sam Lemberger triumphed in the under-14 boys' singles, while his sister Abigail was runner-up in the under-11 singles to Emma Wilson from Cramlington.
