New Miss FSU Puts School Pride First, and It Shows

The spotlight seems to favor Claire Martin, and she's not one to shy away.

This time, it's lighting her up with garnet and gold, Florida State University's colors.

A senior filled with Seminole spirit, Martin, 22, a native of Ortega, is the new Miss FSU.

She was crowned in late March but won't fully step into the role until after the summer. One of her biggest responsibilities will be representing the school at its homecoming celebration and football game.

"It sounds cliche, but it's always been a dream," said Martin, who's majoring in recreation and leisure service administration with an emphasis in special events.

She had vied for the Miss FSU title twice before, once being named second runner-up.

The third time was the charm.

Knowing she was a senior, she said this year she tried even harder and dedicated herself more to the competition. But her motivation was less about glitz and glamour than about school pride. …
