A LOCAL energy chief has claimed the stalled takeover of British Energy, announced today, is a major blow to efforts to tackle the UK's carbon crisis.

George Rafferty, chief executive of NOF Energy, said the news was a setback to Britain's plans for a programme of new-build reactors. But he was still "hopeful" that a deal between EDF and British Energy could be reached.

Talks between the two companies broke down today after an offer by French-owned EDF to buy the UK government's 35% stake in British Energy was rejected.

With 58 nuclear power stations already under its ownership, EDF had been expected to announce a pounds 12bn deal to buy British Energy, which owns eight, including Hartlepool.

Mr Rafferty believes the breakdown could scupper plans to radically cut greenhouse gases.

He said: "I'm still hopeful that a quick solution can be found. Finding alternative energy sources is vital to meet the UK's energy needs and nuclear is an essential part of this mix. …
