TEESSIDE Athletic JFC have built a reputation as one of the foremost community football clubs in the area - and they have the awards to prove it.

They formed in 1993 with 120 members playing at their council-owned base at Green Lane in Redcar. The Charter Standard Community Club now boasts over 620 members, 27 junior teams, a ladies' side plus senior teams in the Wearside and Teesside Leagues.

Club secretary Kevin Fryett told Gazette People: "Five years ago it was the club's vision to provide a top class football facility for the community of Redcar - I don't believe that anybody could argue that we haven't fulfilled that vision."

With the help of funding from the Football Foundation, Athletic boast superb facilities, including modern changing rooms, a social lounge, and a physio room.

The funding came with the remit that the club made football accessible to all, and Athletic have since set out to ensure that people who might have found the sport difficult to access were given the opportunity to participate in first class coaching. This has won the club numerous awards and accolades.

Kevin added: "At the Charter Standard club conference in 2006 at the North Riding County FA headquarters in Stokesley, Sir Trevor Brooking described the club as a flagship project and one of the leading grass roots clubs in the country."

Athletic received the FA's Community Club of the Year award in both 2005 and 2007. Kevin was himself awarded the FA's National Workforce Volunteer of the Year award for the season 2005/06.

Most recently the club was presented with the E-on sponsored award for the best disability project in the country.

Teesside Athletic run several community schemes including estate based football for youngsters in high areas of anti social behaviour and ability counts football for children with disabilities and learning difficulties. …
