BOXER Frankie Gavin was reduced to tears today after being told his Olympics were over before they had even begun.

The world champion south paw was put on a plane to Britain after Team GB bosses accepted he was not going to lose 3lb to reach the 60kg lightweight limit before tomorrows Beijing weigh-in.

The 22-year-old was left in an emotional state and in tears after coach Terry Edwards told him the news.

The Team GB trainer added: It was the toughest decision I have had to make in my entire international career.

Edwards admitted it was a shattering blow to the eight-man boxing squad, where Gavin was one of the favourites to bring back gold. He also revealed that in the five years that Gavin had fought at lightweight, he found it harder and harder to make the limit.

On Sunday, in Macau, Frankie was on target. But I did tell you [the press] it was going to be a struggle and it was a struggle. But he gave it 110 per cent.

He had shed a hell of a lot of water and had become extremely dehydrated.

But nothing was left in him to come out. …
